They were earlier, but since I rejected them they wound up in later posts. LEDs were killed in the making of this project.

You have to remember that the schematic in the article is the final schematic, not the earlier ones. It is the one that worked. I don't hide my mistakes, I don't change posts to hide them either.

 

OK, one last note, I took pin 4 of the second timer to Vcc to turn on the LEDs full time and then measured the current. It was 54.4ma, probably not the best number for these LEDs but it works. I captured the data and posted it here so I can tear down the protoboard, and this was one last valid question I had about the circuit. I guess the next measurement tis the current through the LEDs themselves.
