Stopping a clock on a pcb

I have an IC tester that works in-circuit. But it needs the clock/crystal stopped. What would be a safe way to stop the clock without removing the crystal? Do I just ground one lead or both leads with a resistor?
Thanks

You give no details on the clock circuit, but grounding the passive (non- driven) leg of the crystal should do the trick.

Use a logic gate to gate the clock.
And how do you propose to do this on an existing, functional PCB board?

I agree it possible but suggest that it’s impractical.

No worries. We all miss something every once in a while. Some less; some more. I’m in the “more” camp.

counter on ...counter off that is; square wave high...square wave low thru a timer (gate) (555 timer) ect
an example of basic counter.
using a gate and a counter we can determine that during one period of time there are how many events.
We connect 555 timer to the counter.
However, McGiver must be able to show his math to students.
