Its the SRC 1080 sonodyne.
Yeah, I'm not finding anything on this one either. Best I've found is Sonodyne Professional speakers. They boast 50 years. That takes them back to the 70's, not the 60's.

Tie: Are you sure it's Sonodyne? It looks like it could be a Panasonic.

@TieBravo What's the name and model number of the stereo you want to restore? That might yield something when searching for a schematic.

Being that the SAMS publications are all copyrighted you will not find them for free. And many of the websites that claim to offer free downloads demand installing something onto your computer, which I avoid allowing. The "schematics for free" site has a lot of schematics but finding what you need is not really simple. An on-line search may turn up at least a product review or advertising that may tell you about the speed control system. AND I would point out that speed control on a tape machine is rather critical, at least to some folks. So the fact that a direct connection runs the motor proves not much at all. You might even need to trace out part of the the circuit to discover how it works.

One more thing is that the tape head is often very delicate and it must be aligned perfectly or the sound will not be right. and locating a replacement if it is damaged will be very difficult at best.

Just a late thought - - - you get responses from every button but the play button. Perhaps the switch associated with the play button has burned out. Find that switch and jump it to see if the motor runs. If so - you've found the problem.
