Hello all, I'm new to electronics and find it pretty intriguing. I've got a little project I need help with and that is taking a 12vdc (car battery) and stepping it down to 3vdc at a high current (variable between 30-70amps) can anyone point me in the right direction or to some material to read. Thanks in advance.

 

Well, you could use a resistor but that would be huge and hot or you could come up with a linear regulator to do it but that would still be big and hot. Best bet is a dc-dc converter like this one:

If you're new to electronics then building your own DC-DC converter would be a major challenge, probably frustrating, and more expensive than simply buying one. I'd recommend you cut your teeth on a simpler project.
