Really, tor the rapid motion and hard stops an air cylinder makes the most sense. It will cost more power and be less efficient, but sometimes performance needs outweigh efficiency wants. A hydraulic actuator with a "local" accumulator could deliver even higher performance but at much greater cost. This was not a place for a stepper system.
