Stepper motor brake

For a roller blind that I automated I just used a permanent magnet motor with a worm reduction on it's output. (It was originally a ribbon drive motor on a dot matrix printer.) The gear that drives the blind has two reflective markers on it to give two pulses per revolution of the blind. The markers are detected by a reflective opto sensor.
This is the motor which drives the roller.

When it was first installed it is put into a setup mode. The blind is manually moved to the up and down positions and the count corresponding to the up and down positions are stored. It has been working reliably for about 16 years.
I think using the worm drive is the simplest way to solve the braking problem. It would work just as well with the stepper motor.

Les.
