I have not been able to run across one yet, scavenging anyway, does anyone know if a stepmotor exists that does one degree per step ? What sort of gear I might find one in ?

Shame on me, I should consult a few catalogs, but that requires buying new, and until I can get a handle on how to set the things up, I would rather burn up packratted items.

No, they don't typically come in 1° steps.
15°, 7.5°, 3.6°, 1.8°, 0.9° - and then there's microstepping.

But, did you realize that:
3.6° = 100 steps/rev
1.8° = 200 steps/rev
0.9° = 400 steps/rev
So, 0.9° is a perfect grad, or gradian; there are 400 gradians to a circle.

But get a 10-tooth gear and mesh it to a 9-tooth gear. Then you'll have your 1° increments. Of course, that'll be pretty rough unless you're using herringbone gears - and those have been pretty pricey lately.

Microstepping would be a whole lot cheaper.
