Don't quite see how whether on not you understand how the 555 works, is directly related to doing a simulation for a 555 circuit?
Learning how the 555 works is best done by looking at the data sheet and 555 tutorials.
Simulation is to observe/verify how a particular 555 circuit works.

The LM555 is a direct replacement for an NE555, so you can use an NE555 if you want. There is an NE555 distributed with LTspice.

Note that there two types of models.
One is an idealized behavioral model (for example the output high is equal to the supply voltage), and the other is a transistor level model.
