Solid State voltage Regulator as speed control on AC motor?

I have a number of tools and "appliances" where I need to control the speed more finely such as an angle grinder, router,blowers/fan, etc. They all use 120vac. I found this item that looks like it might be useful in the higher amperage devices I have. Would this work for what I am looking to do?

I alwys get confused if lowering voltage will decrease the speed or if lesser current will do it. I know if I hook some of my 12vdc fans to my 4/8/12/16v PSU the fans spins significantly faster with each increase.

The item mentioned seems to be a high power dimmer because it has a triac output. These devices never give a smooth action because the triac shuts on and off during the power cycle. It is cheap enough, so buy and try. Don't forget the heat sink!

As long as they are Universal Motors, which hand tools etc usually are, there are a few available that use the same principle as the one you posted, but for that price you can usually get them in a case with cord etc for the same $$.
Max.

Thanks for the responses. I never saw others that were capable of handling this amount of current - which is why I was interested.
