I say the reason soldering fumes/smoke drift your direction, is because your body heat causes an updraft of heat, which causes the vacuum, (Filled with fumes); of cold air, to be drawn up your nostrils.
As you solder, the fumes/smoke.... jump in to fill that vacuum left behind from the heat leaving your body.

Thus, smoke up your nose.

Same reason that a shower curtain sucks in at the bottom.

That sounds plausible metalmann but what about camp fire smoke? It follows you too, no matter what side of the fire you stand on, and that's outside in the wind.

 

I suspect it has more to do with remembering the bad times more than the good ones. It is uncomfortable, and leaves a deeper impression.

If it were possible for Robert Duvall to obtain copyright ownership of that famous line from the movie classic Apocalypse Now, he would have made a killing from its use over the years since.

I sure have used various adaptations of that line more than a few times, including one version that is far too risque to repeat in a family oriented forum such as this one.

Bernoulli's Principle. As the wind goes around you it creates a low pressure region near your body and the smoke tends to move towards it to become entrained in the airflow.

 

On a serious note, isn't the reason for solder flux smoke due to the ionic nature of the flux? If the human body is of one natural polarity and the flux smoke is the opposite the body would attract the smoke.
