Hey guys,

I've been pretty merrily chugging along w/ my digital Radioshack station (Sears replacement tips work pretty well). Lately I'm finding a lot of really neat components limited to QFN/BGA form factors. I will be building a reflow oven one of these days, but in the mean time, what are my options for working with these types of chips?

U-tube has alot of videos that show all new ways to solder.
You will be impressed.

 

I have seen some posts speaking of results with a hot plate and hot air.

 

I've worked on professional equipment that used this, in the form of an inert gas (nitrogen). The hot plate is good for all soldering jobs, if you preheat the board to 150°C you will be suprised how much easier even straightforward SMT solder is (the flow is much better).

QFN packages on a $20 hot plate works well. I haven't tried BGAs.
