Soldering a USB cable directly to PC Board

Someone has suggested that fixing a broken USB micro port is as easy as completely removing the USB port, then cutting the USB cable and soldering the wires directly to the PC board.

It seems to me this would be very difficult. Much harder than soldering another USB port back onto the board.

What do they know that I don't?

Thanks. We're taking only thousandths of an inch between pads and the wire inside a USB cable is both very tiny and stranded so I guess it takes some skill to do it this way. Much easier (I think) just to re-flow a USB port back on it.
