Is 3 X 5&7/8 in too big for panel; 10V OC, 70 mA SC, just right for project @ US $ 6.95, The Electronic Goldmine. Would go well with 4 AA NiCd batteries. Could not bring up jj's 43HC14, but TC1426CPA, dual driver should work, source ?? Comparator LM1393,dual 8 pin, & one 74HC00 should be all of the IC's needed except for H-br. Use j j's help on that.
Just doing some guesswork, motor 200 mA, operate time, one min. ea. way is about .o1 A hr.; 80mA X 5 hr = .4 A hr. , logic @ 5mA X 24= .12A hr.

The H-b will work without inverters or buffers but, to make things safe, its better to add one. 1/6 of 43HC14 goes to one input and another 1/6 on second.

Do post the final schematic before you start building.

The 5 7/8 size of the panel is a little large. I'll try looking around to see if I can find others. Just so I know, what's the lowest voltage and current rating I should look for?

Still just guesswork; total demand around .2Ahr, 5 hr of sun= 40mA, X 1,4 = 56mA[charging efficiency]; 4 AA NiCd's @ =-60% charge = 5.72V+.7=6.42+ 1 for good measure, = 7.42V X 1.4, panel OC drop, = 8.988V or 9V OC & 60mA.

Ok, I found a 9v @ 70ma panel ( http://www.futurlec.com/Solar_Cell.shtml ) and the dimensions work a bit better. It's the one at the bottom of the page. Let me know what your opinion is. I also start putting a parts list together for review, and a schematic, but I may need some help with the schematic, and I'll make the mods to the H-Bridge as both you and jj suggested.

I thought it was a great find. I was wondering why I couldn't hardly find any spec on LM1393, but after some digging I found it. Excluding the H-Bridge, do I need the resistors as you speced on the first scan? Or just the 3 ICs as you said?

D1-1N4001, R2,3,4,5-47k, R1-1M, C1- 100uF, Q1,2 -LM393, NAND X4-74HC00, 2 ea.-1M, 2 ea.-100k, 2 ea. sw- Micro-sw with lever or roller. Buffer-driver? could find no inf on j j's 43HC14, DS3630 might be ok if available, & rethinking another 74HC00 just might work paralleled with the other with 4 AA's.

output current @ 4.5V or 5V
40106 .8mA X 6

74C14 3.3mA X 6
74HC00 4mA X 4
DS3630 16mA X 6
subject to review, my choice would be 74HC00

Wish my printor would feed fron a roll of paper. Each IC needs VDD & VSS,+_, once per package, Q1, LM393, +pin 8.- p4; Q3 +p14, - p7. Need line from + battery to + bus. May need more drive for H, but do not know what the load is yet. Nice drawing.

I'll try to redraw this on a smaller scale, I was still a bit out of it last night. I wasn't even sure I got everything correct.

Thanks for the catch, I'll make the adjustments when I get home. I'll also try to put a detailed list of parts together.
