I sent a cut&paste like this to my ISP/security about a month ago asking them if they could do anything about these attacks coming at me. No reply.

Yesterday I got a notice that if I didn't stop sending out Dos attacks/Smurf my internet service would be terminated.
Talked to head nerd, reformatted my C: drive, reinstalled Vista, and today I got another warning.

So I opened up the computer, plugged into the spare hard drive and found...Ubuntu!
I must have done that about 6 years ago.
So here I am...in a version of Linux.
I'm sure joeyd999 will be thrilled.

Updates of this Thread will happen if this doesn't stop...or maybe updates won't happen. Maybe my Internet service will be terminated.

I don't know why formatting my C: drive didn't fix this. Now we'll see if Ubuntu fixes it.
I'm wondering...if the Dos attacks come from apparently thousands of random IP's, is my IP address in the pile because it's a random number being spoofed or is my Vista drive suffering from malware?

PS, I'd like to mention that it's awkward trying to navigate in this O.S. simply because it's unfamiliar. Many of the assets I had on my Vista Computer are not available right now and I'm not going to try to transfer them until I'm sure I am clear of the Smurf Attack problem. Much to learn!

Just for a heads up my doctor told me that when I start seeing little blue people in my house I need to see him about changing my pills.

For the longest time I thought there was a witch in my house too but since I stopped taking my pills she disappeared now.

What's a guy to do?

A tale of caution to all the eager young men.

No matter how pretty she is.
No matter how pious and reserved she is.
No matter how hot.
Somewhere there's a guy who's sick of her shi....

I have no idea what this says. :(
But everyone is more computer literate than I am.
Seems simple enough just $%##@##$%^^&&**.

So here I am...in a version of Linux.
I've been meaning to make the transition myself --- Windows 7 Ultimate was ok (with the exception of its hopelessly 'broken' search feature) until the updates began introducing increasing amounts of 'integral spyware' (there are distinct advantages to coding one's own FW -- prominent among them being the absence of secret 'white-lists':D) -- Anywho, it seems Linux really is the best option -- Still, my policy remains: 'trust, but verify'

Best regards and good luck!

I'm not sure I'm in love with Linux, it's merely awkward right now, but it's one method of finding out why my ISP is threatening to shut my computer off.

If some of you here have not read my post about changing my machines over to linux I can say hands down I am not disappointed about the change. Sure I will need a single windows machine for my specialist software (mainly pic programming, GerberMagic and xilinx CPLD), but other than that I cannot wait to change every machine I own.

If only wine worked with all programs then I would be totally off my dependency on windows :(

You surprise me! -- I should think it would be obvious that "$%##@##$%^^&&**" is by way of saying ^*$(##%$##$$&n &**(&$@#@{}[}{9#7(67*&8 !@@##$$@< with emphasis upon &<#>&_!$,';][\|^*%($)#_@ --- I mean really!:D:D:D

Ahh, yes. Now that you point it out I can see exactly how it works! :D It should have been intuitively obvious to the most casual observer.o_O

I found a 6 year old Ubuntu in my spare HDD. Ten.04 would be an improvement, so I'm moving into 12.04 in about 3 minutes. I'm sure it got much better in 6 years.

Hi...

A smurf attack has nothing to do with your computer operating system. It is caused by an attacker sending a directed broadcast into your network that causes your computer ,or computers, to reply and send frames out the network. If you have your own router, turn off the directed subnet broadcast capability.

...And if that fails to solve the problem, it's down to malware (it does happen, albeit infrequently) -- in which case installation of a decent (i.e. minutely configurable) FW is in order -- a good idea anyway:cool:

Best regards

Welcome to the world of Linux, were nothing is easy and everything you do takes 10 times longer than before! I booted up Linux fairly recently, and am learning as I go. So, I feel your pain acomin'. However, what I like about Linux is the great support from the free and open source communities, flexibility and scaleability. Also, the amount of support for embedded MCU's which I'm engaged in learning too.

Install virtualbox. Then you can run Windows 'as an application' under Linux. You get the best of both worlds, and a blue screen won't cause you whole system to take a dump.
