ok so is bought some 5mm just amber LED's SMD style ... why does it have to have 6 legs?? Is there three seperate amber lights within the bulb?? How many do I need to connect for maximum brightness??

There might be 3 chips in the housing.
Lookup that datasheet of the leds.
That will tell you how they are connected.

Well I got them of eBay so no data sheet supplied!! I know the red green and blue ones need all 3 connected but I'll connect all three anyway if it's necessary for max brightness! Thanks guys it's much appreciated

 

The extra legs may also be for heatsinking the device. Or maybe the extra pins are "no-connect".

The led might have similar connections.
The voltage will be different as with those white leds.
