We do not know what is your perception of how computers work and how you acquired this perception.
Whatever it is, you have made a simple concept more complicated than it is in reality.
Is it possible for you to totally remove any preconceived ideas about computers that you have acquired and start afresh?

1) Do you understand the operation of a light switch? There are two states, ON and OFF. That is it. There is no more explaining to do. You cannot get any simpler than that. That is the exact fundamental operation of a computer.

2) Do you know what is a blackboard or a whiteboard (the modern version of a blackboard)? Either one will do.
Write an X on the board.
Now erase the X and write Y on the board.
What part of this example you cannot understand and accept?
