Q and /Q are both 5v when they go hi.
I can't use a 74HC14 because I don't have room, and I only have 8-pin SMD-to-breadboard adapting PCBs.

Ok...so a reliable fix is going to require an additional gate. You might as well do what it takes to fix it..
