Sim racing PS/2 cable issue

I have searched for similar related issues on this briefly but can't see anything which seems to be on my level of understanding, so apologies if this is a common problem covered somewhere else.

I have a Fanatec CSR: https://www.fanatec.com/us-en/support/product;old_product_id;157 with an optional shifter:
(video review as it has since had a remodel)

I recently got the wheel and shifter back out and found that the male-to-male ps2 cable which connects the shifter to wheel is AWOL, and I can't find it.

Instead I went to Maplin recently (UK, they are sadly shutting down) and got an off-the-shelf ps/2 male-to-male , but it doesn't work - I can (rather bewilderingly) get upshifts (gear up) to work but not downshifts (gear down).
I know it doesn't register downshifts as you can custom-map the button in the game config menu, and when I try to map gear down it gives me about a 10-second window where the downshift does not register even once. The upshift works perfectly in the config screen

Since I thought that PS/2 cables were standardised this is confusing, but instead of ordering a new 'official' cable from the maufacturer (I am being cheap basically), I thought I'd poke around and see if any signal for the downshift is being sent at all.

Therefore I tried to use a multimeter to work out what pins were coming out of the ps/2 receiever port on the shifter when it has my Maplin cable (running from the powered-up wheel) connected to it for power. I can find a voltage across the pins marked +3.3v and ground on the diagram, but can't find a pulse on any other pins when clicking the sequential stick back and forth at all.

Here is a small circuit representation of the socket pinout followed by photos of the socket:

So, all in all, is there a way someone thinks I could definitively test to see if a pulse is being sent from the shifter? Also does anyone think the new cable is likely to be the culprit? Thanks in advance

P.S: Sorry for the long post
