Signal generator/receiver

Hi members! I'd like to build a signal generator that would produce square wave pulses across conductors and have a receiver that would compare the received signals to the sent signals for integrity. Is this doable or pie in the sky>

Certainly that can be done. No question about that. But to do it with a specific frequency and voltage level may become more challenging. The system like that I built used a sine wave instead of a square wave, a frequency of 60 Hz, and the receivers were 6 volt pilot lights. It checked modular phone cable very well. Yours may be a bit more complex. OR maybe not.

Really, such an instrument is presently available, which would be a network analyzer. The difference being it probably does not use a square wave. I suggest visiting a test equipment supplier website and reading about the capabilities of those instruments and seeing if that would meet your requirements.. Certainly the test function is available at some price level.
Another possible option would be to locate a much older technology "distortion meter" instrument. Those were used to evaluate "HiFi" equipment many years ago.The principle was to provide an audio signal to the input and to compare it to the amplified output, with the concept being that anything extra was the product of distortion.
