Recently I saw this guy try to jump start his car in a dumb way. It kind of worked for him. But shouldn't there have been gassing that would cause an explosion when he made sparks with the supercapacitors? Especially if it was discharged so much.
Another way to 'explode' a car battery is to jump one that is so low that it froze solid. Found that out when I first started driving. Not necessarily, battery needs to have been producing hydrogen by charging a while and this one is so dead it does not make any gas. Hydrogen dissipates rapidly in air. What explodes is the hydrogen in the air on top of the liquid cells. New batteries are much tighter sealed, so they are safer. I have done similar sparking with jumper cables and never had a battery explosion. Now if you were to remove the cells caps makes the potential for explosion worse.

I kind of assumed it would gas a fair amount when he initially applied the supercaps that were charged to 14V. I guess I should have taken that into account..Not necessarily, battery needs to have been producing hydrogen by charging a while and this one is so dead it does not make any gas. Car battery gassing occurs at higher voltages, like over 14 vdc charging power, like when the engine is running. If you charge under 13.8, battery does not gas. I charge my boat batteries continuously at 13.8 to 13.6 with the boat's charger-converter. When engines run voltage goes to 14.2 to 14.7
Lets see now, I was ~17 at the time and cell phones hadn't been invented or digital cameras, people normally didn't carry a camera with them in the stone ages back then. And I'm now 70+ years old and even if I had a picture it would probably be lost.pics??????
Lol....just wondering....I have never seen that.....Lets see now, I was ~17 at the time and cell phones hadn't been invented or digital cameras, people normally didn't carry a camera with them in the stone ages back then. Lets just say blowing up a battery and not having the money for a new one, pictures were the last thing on my mind. The battery and the coat that was covered with acid kind of took more of my thoughts that very cold, cold day.
