what can be the reason why pin 1 and 8 of my 555 timer ICs keep shorting when i put it in my circuit and connect the supply.

 

I suggest you post a picture of your circuit. Most likely, there is something wrong with that.

 

Those are the power supply pins. There are ways of shorting the power supply elsewhere on the 555, such as pin 7.

You could simply have a short somewhere, I agree a picture would help.

 

please post your circuit diagram you are using in your connections and also your circuit,it will really help to see the connection of other components in the circuit board.

 

My guess is that you may have the power supply connected reverse--this will do it every time...

 

I've done that. The 555 never survives.
