Quick safety question..

Had an issue wiring the lights below, smoke started to appear from wire connected to the switch, insulation has slightly melted as result.

The company which sells them advises wiring as follows: This works fine after a trial without using any wires to extend etc..
switch > green to + battery terminal
black to - Light negative wires
Light > red to + battery terminal
black to - Switch wire

What i did was solder the lighting wires directly to the switch board to save extending the wires so only one set of wires which will be the switch run to the battery. The switch wire was also short so connected some automotive wire to extend it. This extension wire connects from the switch to battery was lower gauge then the other wires used. Considerably thicker.
So the lights worked fine with the switch however smoke appeared from the point where the extension wire connected to the switch wire. Switched it of in time and had some slight melting on the switch wire as a result.

Curious to know what caused the over heating, was it the thicker extension wire connecting to the battery supplying to many amps?

When connecting via the recommended method i skipped the extensions cable and it worked fine no over heating.

Will the same wire size work okay or is connecting the lights directly to the switch causing a problem. Assumed it would be okay as it works the same way just connected further down the circuit.. The extension wire is 12 awg and slightly thicker then wires for switch and light

their will be a fuse connected in line just need to determine the cause of the smoke. No wires etc were touching 100%

anyway hoping you can in-lighten me with the reason to this please

thanks in advance

Just a thought

would their be a way to wire lights directly to the already existing motorcycle wiring in place. these are for halogens which are not installed currently. All connectors are in place so maybe just a case of locating the right wire and finding a safe and creative way to connect the black and red lighting wires..
