I used to grind my own Ft-243s. People don't realize how precarious our position was in WW2 in this regard. We had ONE source of electronics grade quartz!

My first experience with crystal oscillators was with RC models in the early 1950's in Los Angeles. At that time, it was fairly inexpensive to get crystals ground to any frequency. Even the local hobby shop knew where to send out for it. The official frequency was of course 27.225 MHz. I had my crystals ground to something different (I don't remember what off hand) -- less interference even with our super regenerative receivers -- and it formed the basis for a simple-minded two-channel rig I used. Reed transmitters and receivers became available about the same time, so I didn't proceed very far down that path of lawlessness.
