I am currently using a mechanical relay to power an ignition coil to generate a spark by sending the power to the relay coil via one of the normally closed contacts. I'm guessing there is probably a better way to accomplish triggering the ignition coil, perhaps with some kind of chip?

 

If its low voltage dc use a mosfet.

 

Googling "transistor ignition circuit" gives lots of examples.

 

Guess I should have mentioned it is 12vdc, so I should be good with that then.
