Repairing an Oven Timer

Hello

I have a basic understanding of electronics and am just looking for some opinions on a problem...

The digital timer on our oven has an intermittent problem. Occasionally you hear a buzzing noise, like current jumping a gap, and then the house circuit breakers trip. Most of the time it works OK.

Sometimes you hear the buzzing noise and the circuit breakers do not trip, but afterwards the clock settings are all corrupted and need to be reset.

We never use the timer to switch the oven on and off, so the problem occurs when the timer is doing nothing other than displaying the time.

It's awkward to remove the oven and so I haven't taken out the timer yet, but I have seen pictures of the same timer on the internet. Apart from other components the timer contains a relay and a large capacitor. Without testing further I am guessing that one of these will likely be causing the problem and needs to be replaced.

Would you agree?

Thanks for your advice
Robin
