I'm somewhat sure that I come from a bloodline of both slave owners and slaves...
That sounds interesting. Americans are constantly bombarded with the non-issue of slavery which hasn't existed here for 150 years. Slavery hasn't existed in a lot of countries for centuries. Please describe how a person with a history of slaves in the family arrived in Iceland.

Well Iceland was discovered by some lost vikings about 1200 years ago (To be fair some Irish monks had settled on an small island few kilometers north of Iceland before) . While Iceland was being colonized, the settlers coming from Scandinavia often took some slaves with them(If history is correct) from Ireland, Scotland and other countries. It was abolished in the 11-12th hundred to own slaves but how many centuries it took to take full effect is a guess...

Exactly that, there were escaped European slaves inhabiting islands in the West Indies.

Max.
I almost broached that subject earlier in this thread but Wendy and I decided my personal account was too inflammatory to be posted in public. Your reference to a scholarly work makes an excellent alternative and saves me sticking my neck out.

Number Twelve

That sure was a conversation stopper! One mention that somebody besides Africans were slaves and the thread ends. I have a new appreciation for the speech Mel Gibson gave in (the movie) Brave Heart. Politically correct wins the day. :(
