Here's one of those Halloween stories about a purported electrical phenomenon.

In the 1950s, a transmission line from Hoover Dam experienced some kind of fault with some strange effects on household appliances.

According to my grandparents who lived in Boulder City, the kitchen lights went dim however the burners and also the oven of their electric stove came on even though all the switches were turned off. Their neighbors also claimed their electric stove came on by itself.

The next day, the news reported that a transmission line fell somewhere in the desert between the dam and the California border. Being an electrical/electronics geek, I questioned them about the authenticity of what they claimed to observe, but they were adamant that it actually happened.

The lights dimming is not an unusual effect of a line failure. However, regarding the electric stoves coming on, this "event" must be some kind of urban legend. :D

back in the 50's , electric ovens didnt use any electronics, high ffrequency stuff coming down the line might cause problems with newer ovens, but not those older ones.
