Ah, good one, though I prefer it's cousin the 40106. There is also the 4584.

The 74C14 has some limitations I believe, that the others do not. They are pretty much interchangeable.

The 7447 is one that if you can find you should probably get. It is a BCD to 7-segment LED display chip. Very useful if you're trying to make a counter or a clock. The 7448 would be good too if you're using a decade counter.

Not sure if this is completely on topic, but I thought I'd throw it out there, since I have had need of these chips in the past.

Speaking of uCs, if you're thinking of getting into programming I highly recommend starting with a PICkit2 and an 18F1330. These 18 pin microcontrollers are fairly simple and excellent little chips to learn with. They have a built-in oscillator, ADC, and two selectable 8/16 bit timers. They are the chips I started with and I am glad I had those to experiment with.

PIC16F690 and PICKit 2 are good choices as well.

It's hard to suggest just one mid-range, but if I were forced to, it'd be the 18 pin 16F1827

Features (from Microchip):
Enhanced Mid-range Core with 49 Instruction, 16 Stack Levels
Flash Program Memory with self read/write capability
Internal 32MHz oscillator
Integrated Capacitive mTouch Sensing Module
Data Signal Modulator Module
MI2C, SPI, EUSART w/auto baud
2 ECCP & 2 CCP (Enhanced/Capture Compare PWM)
Comparators with selectable Voltage Reference
12 Channel 10b ADC with Voltage Reference
25mA Source/Sink current I/O
Four 8-bit Timers (TMR0/TMR2/TMR4/TMR6)
One 16-bit Timer (TMR1)
Extended Watchdog Timer (EWDT)
Enhanced Power-On/Off-Reset
Brown-Out Reset (BOR)
In Circuit Serial Programming (ICSP)
On Board In-Circuit Debug
Wide Operating Voltage (1.8V – 5.5V)
Low Power PIC16LF182x variants (1.8V – 3.6V)
Standby Current (PIC16LF182X): 30 nA @ 1.8V, typical

Mr. Chips is the gatekeeper for this project.

I don't think µC may be allowed, but we'll see. This is for beginners after all.

If µC do make the list it should be kept to a small list.

The way I see this concept is something a college or club would have on hand for members. This is not meant to order after the fact, that is what something like this site is for.

The CMOS Rail-to-Rail op amp TLV247x has a very narrow supply voltage range: 2.7V - 6V. But if one plans to build many circuits where this condition is met, its parameters make it suitable for a wide range of tasks:

http://www.ti.com/lit/gpn/tlv2470

A good output drive capability (35mA) and a moderate supply current (600uA) which can be reduced to 1uA with a shutdown pin for some op amps of the family: TLV2470 (1 channel), TLV2473 (2 channels), TLV2475 (3 channels). Other parameters: Bandwidth 2.8 MHz, input offset voltage 250uV, input bias current 2.5pA.

I'd suggest a "General Purpose" Rail to Rail op amp, and a "Precision" op amp. Both having the ability to operate on a single positive supply rail and a ground rail.

Mr. Chips, I hope this is not too far off-topic, but I have seen that you have created a heading for app notes in your first post of the Selection Guide. So here is one that might help to understand the op amp datasheets:

Op Amps for Everyone, Chapter 11: Understanding Op Amps Parameters (the rest of the free e-book is a popular treatment of Op Amps at the intermediate level)
www.ti.com/lit/an/slod006b/slod006b.pdf

Or take a look at the combination of these 2 app notes:

AN 723 Operational Amplifier AC Specifications and Applications

Would it be meaningful to add a transistor to fill the gap between the 2n2222A and the power transistors? Something like the bc338 or another upto 1A Ic.
