I want to evaluate power consumption of external USB ssd. Can I expect an accurate current evaluation if I put a dmm in series with the psu of this? Meaning, Will displayed current equal max drawn current in any circumstances?

No, a DMM will not read impulse currents. But I doubt if any SS device has Impulse currents. In case of a SSD, I think the current drawn is the same irrespective of whether the drive is idle, reading or writing.
