Hello eerybody. Just a quick question does anybody know why my pickit2 doesnt recognize the pic18f26k80? I downloaded the newest device list which includes that pic but it still does not recognize it. Is there something else that needs to be done besides changing the dat file?

Goto the Development Tool Selector

and you'll see that your PIC18f26k80 is supported by PICkit3, ICD2/3 and RealICE. No PICkit2 listed..
Edit: I spoke too soon. Its indeed on the PICkit2 list. Sorry. DTS only reports the current stuff.
Make sure PICkit2 is selected and connected in MPLAB. In Configure->Select Device make sure PICkit 2 is green for the 18F26K80. Select Debugger-> Select PICkit2 then 'Connect' . It should show that its connected in the PICkit2 window.
If all of that is OK, its probably the hardware connection (MCLR controllable by PICkit 2, power correct, PCD and PCK ICSP lines not conflicting with attached circuitry etc.)

The problem is that pickit2 is not supported in mplab to program that chip, so I am using the pickit2 application. In the application when it searches for the chip it says device not found. I know that it is not the circuitry because the chip programs with the pickit3.
Ps pickit3 is not mine if it was I wouldn't be bothering with the pickit2.

Open the PK2 programmer application and click Help->about. Verify:
Application version 2.61.00
Device File version 1.62.14
OS Firmware Version 2.32.00 (might vary, MPLAB 8.63 is what's currently running here. It may vary with MPLAB..).
Click Programmer->Manual Device Select (checkmark appears) then on the main window, scroll through the Device pull-down to find 18F26K80. If its not there, the latest data file is not being used.
Close the app, download the device file 1.16.14 from here:

and copy it to c:\program files(x86)\Microchip\PICkit2 v2\ (for Win-7).
IF the 26K80 is listed, sorry, don't know what's happening but I agree, hardware differences between the two would be the first place to look.
You also can open a support ticket at Microchip and ask them what the differences are. Finally, check out PK2 FAQs at Microchip's forum:
