Thank you TQFP44

Have:

Xpress board

Curiosity 8 bit board

Low Pin Count board Bonus Buy Digikey (Extra PIC's and EEPROMS )

Have a come around to breadboard.

Hard wired boards have programming pins in one place or they have jumpers

to add a configuration or two. That limits them.

PKOB on Curiosity can be checked in IPE.

You pick a PIC and it will show you green or red button.

Means it will work in board or not. Okay feature.

My 'dev' boards are usually dip socketed, strip board , with external power, for PIC 8 and 16 bit , and like most starters in the past had to use a Pickit 2 or 3 , you tend to run out of IO pins quickly even when you get to understand PIC architecture, an LCD is 6 minimum unless you use a serial device, so I mainly start with big as possible , pins . prog space, ram, Mhz ... you can always scale back for a project. get typing :)

Thank you TQFP

Yes. We are working our way up to hardwired dev boards.

Tracked down the parts. We settled in at Futurlec.

They carry just enough to cover what we're doing.

Small outfit. Not like Digikey and Mouser.

Perhaps I should think about doing some professional boards but its just a hobby , when you get into > 28 pins you need a different approach , this is my 'make' for a PIC18F45K22 44 pin , dev bd... ( I have many such :) ) It ran a Z80 + 32k memory, and sent bytes to PC terminal..

Zilog sent me an EZ8 kit. I need to get back to them for a Z80 kit.

I have a couple 18F K PIC's. Have not worked my way up to them yet.

One is for CCS E3 mini lessons and Embedded C Programming C book. CCS

18F14K50 I think.

Just 'peeled' a 18F46K22 off 'storebought' development board.

PICcircuits Malaysia 28 pin dev board.

Kind of cool for us pre solder hobbyists.

Has that limitation of being hard wired for one programming pin 'protocol' or what ever it's called.

Footprint?

Picture of what?

Going to mush on with lesson here.

It's interesting to find out about all these things you keep hearing about.

Good tutorial.

Being more familiar with PIC's and my learning plan I figured something out.

I keep hearing 'Get an advanced PIC.'

Well. I looked at first Midrange tutorial.

I can move up to a 12F629.

For side projects that is.

Plus it will be usable later.

Thank you Max!

Did find out it is still a OSC calibration write PIC.

Did see a workaround.

Use an external timing source. Then set your configuration.

Found out what RC meant doing tutorial.

That is a simple timing circuit. Says it's least accurate but that's okay.

Then the 'Resonator' I think is an all in one 3 legged crystal setup.

12F629 and 12F675 move up to interrupts and better analog according to author.

I really don't need those at this stage.

Will look at next couple Midrange lessons and see what simplest non calibration routine PIC is.

Got the answer.

'Modern examples include the 8 pin 12F629 the 20 pin 16F690 and the 40 pin 16F887.'

That's from intro to tutorials Midrange paragraph.

16F690 has been on my list because it's used in Chuck Hellebuyck PICBasic or C book.

Already own a 16F887 because I just wanted to get my first 40 pin PIC.

I am not going to trip whether 690 and 887 are used in tutorials later.

Right now 16F887 is the PIC for side projects.

Correction.

Picked up the 887 to use with Olimex 40 pin serial dev board.

Those are well made!

Actually got it working with one of those hobbyist programming softwares. PGM or something.

Tells you something when small programming software works more consistently than Microchip.

Serial port to boot!

Getting a high quality 3rd Party programmer is on my list definitely.
