ARGHH - symptoms looked like the monitor was getting flaky sync.
It was easier to try a new PSU than the MOBO, so I did that. No luck there - next it was easier to swap out the monitor.
Turns out there was a bulged electrolytic in the monitor power board.
I miss analogue............................
