It’s a 4401 P-channel enhancement mode MOSFET

It is switching power to something but it is impossible to tell what from the photo. Because of the large inductor nearby I suspect it is part of a switching regulator or power supply, but that’s a guess.

It is part of a circuit at the power input for an instrument that is battery-operated by a 7.4V LiPo battery.
Do you think it is used to switch power either from the external power adapter or the built-in LiPo battery?

Without knowing where in the circuit it is located it could be, or not. Tracing the big flood traces that are connected to several pins on each side could help. One will be power the other will lead to what is getting power.
