My latest college assignment includes a pass question on oscillators, it asks what is the effects of positive and negative on these circuits? It would have been nice if our lecturer would have explained what an oscillator is! Please help.

You can't have an oscillator without positive feedback... If you don't get enough loop phase shift and gain (gain >1 at phase shift = 180 degrees) the circuit will not oscillate.
