There’s no need to run screaming from sargassum, despite the tone of some stories covering the Florida-bound blooms. Still, they pose a threat to coral reefs and tourism-dependent livelihoods alike. When the stuff piles up on beaches, it rots, emitting skunky hydrogen sulfide.

 

Ever heard of the Sargasso Sea? Look it up. Even up here in Georgia I start seeing lots of Sargassum late in the summer just offshore when it floats up on the Gulf Stream from down below. Nothing new, except maybe for young journalists looking for something to justify their paycheck on a slow day who have never heard of Sargassum before.
