So, yesterday I didn’t drink. At the moment no problems with drinking. Sleeping is the problem. If you quit drinking do remember having trouble sleeping?

I suffer from insomnia and as long as I take my evening prescribed medication falling asleep works fine. Failing to take my meds results in staring at the ceiling. As to drinking? I never had a correlation between my drinking and sleep. My best suggestion would be to consult your primary care physician. That's all I got.

I' ve been given the prder from my doctor, but have no problem sleeping.
Had to sell off all my beer/wine making equip. :(
Just resolve myself to alchohol-free beer, not as bad as I expected.

Exercise. If I spend a couple of hours outdoors I sleep better.
It is not unusual for me to wake up two to four times at night to go the bathroom. I sleep for about 2 hours at a time.
If I don't fall back to sleep, I don't fight it. I sit up in bed, listen to a podcast in French or check in on AAC! Fortunately, it puts me back to sleep! Me and the XYL sleep in different rooms because she says I snore like a freight train. The CPAP helps but I don't always use it.

Have you tried taking melatonin and/or a magnesium supplement in the evening?
Some sources say they can help sleep.
Thanks for the reply’s. I think I’ll give it more time for my body to get use to the new me. I’ll try more exercise see how that goes then maybe the magnesium. I’ll look into it more.

Thanks again,

A friend recently gave me a T shirt that read:
I don't know if alcohol is the solution, but it is worth a shot.I generally have a shot of whisky every night before I go to sleep. So far so good. Knock on forehead.

I once gave up drinking for four months, as a challenge. I've never really had a problem with it. I just wanted to know what the effects would be if I gave it up.

After the four months I lost about 7 kg, even though I kept eating exactly as before. And my sleep improved quite noticeably ... but my social life became something of a bore, I have to admit.

Vistaril is often prescribed for cessation but Benadryl is available across the counter. After many years of sobriety I still don’t sleep more than a couple of hours at a time. Alzheimer’s also affects my sleeping. Melatonin leaves me feeling groggy the next day.

So I gave up drinking for a while ... I don't know how long it's gonna last. But the last year I was into the habit of having a beer or a glass of wine with my dinner. Innocent enough, I suppose ... but the problem is that I was doing it every day. The last few months I've been feeling either tired or exhausted, or drained of a lot of energy. I'm 61, and I thought that those were symptoms of old age.

Anyway, I had my last drink on monday night (my wife's birthday) and since tuesday I've been feeling like crap, until now.

On tuesday and wednesday Not only did I feel exhausted, but I had a sore body as well, and a slight but constant headache. But today, after lunch, I suddenly felt lighter and with a clearer head. I guess I went through a short period of withdrawal. But it seems to be over now, thank God.

The good news is that I haven't felt the urge of pouring myself a drink. Zero, zip, zilch, nada ... so I'm covered on the matter of having a physical addiction. It was more of a bad habit, from the looks of it.

I've also been moderating my food intake, and I'm avoiding sugar as much as I can ... I'm looking forward to losing some weight. And it will suit me well, since I have to carry my 45 kg daughter upstairs and downstairs from the second floor every day, sometimes three times a day. So losing 10 kg or more would be a huge benefit in that regard. My back is definitely going to thank me for it.

Those are the benefits I’m hoping for. My Wife has MS sometime she falls and I have to help her up.

Good Luck I think mine was also a habit more than a need. That because I started to drink at 4:30pm everyday and drank till 10:30pm.

THC is an excellent sleep aid. But for me, the best sleep management is sleep when i am sleepy. If i don’t fall asleep within 10 minutes I get up and do something. Usually an hour of reading will do it. I average roughly 8 hours, but it is often 6 hours one night and 9 or 10 the next.

I hate to tell you this, but that is not “not a problem”. That was the way I was before having two attacks of pancreatitis. Being in the hospital for 3 days prohibited from eating solid food cured me. After the first attack, the doc said no more than 2 drinks a day. I did that for a year before it crept back up to about 4 and I had my second attack. Now i have been several years averaging one drink a day and never more than 3. The trick for me is drink only 3 days each week. This is a scientifically proven method of keeping your tolerance from creeping up and needing more. Do the same with THC (where legal) and the week is pretty well covered.

THC I stopped using it while working, Retired now I have my card. I usually smoke 3 joints a day. I slept last night until it started to rain with thunder and lightning.
I was tossing and turning until morning, probably got 6 hrs sleep hitting rim.

I’ll take your word for it on the alcohol. I won’t drink any alcoholic drink of any kind, I don’t even drink soft drinks, just good ol fashioned filtered water.

Thanks for the input,
kv

So I got 8hrs sleep last night, of course it’s a little cooler since the last rain storm ended last night. But, I started out first night no sleep, it’s kept getting better the next and so on to 8hrs after a week. I hope it’s stays this way fingers crossed.
