Books like this were common in the middle of the last century. It was simply expected that young people (12-18 years old) should have enough basic knowledge of science and technology so that they could understand the technological advancements which were transpiring.

This particular book even mentions Michael Faraday's lectures on the "The Chemical History of a Candle" from 1859-1860. When I was a young student (1970's) the Michael Faraday lectures "The Forces of Matter" and "The Chemical History Of A Candle" were required reading for all 8th grade students at the school I attended. I still recommend them to people I know who are technically curious.

It is a pity that today most people could not distinguish the difference between the technology they use everyday and magic.
