If portability isn't required, buy a secondhand monitor. I recently bought a 22" LCD monitor from Goodwill for US$7.50.

Do you mean that it suffered known physical damage and you know that killed it, or merely that the monitor is now dark for no known reason?

In the latter case attaching another monitor, just a test, will reveal if that part of the video card is working or not. If the external monitor remains dark, it may well be your video card that has died. I'm no Windows expert but on Macs there are diagnostic tools available from Apple. If the external monitor works, it might be helpful to run appropriate diagnostics to see what it finds.

If you know there was mechanical damage to the display, replacing it may be possible. I replaced my MacBook screen recently due to a tiny pinhead causing a crack at the edge.

Before you do much work, you should consider what this machine is worth (very little I suspect?). It may well be cheaper and easier to just find another, newer machine if not a new one. There are a lot of older machines coming on the market due to incompatibility with Windows 11.

If the monitor is simply not working it may be a failed connection. I was given a very nice "ASUS" laptop with a physically cracked screen. My hope is to be able to find a dead laptop, same model, and swap screens. It would be more powerful than the HP probook that I use now with a better screen, I think. Buying a new screen for it is beyond my toy budget.

I have an old laptop that I still use. The screen no longer works.
I simply plug in a VGA monitor.
I damaged the screen on mine so I did that same thing, except mine is a newer model and has an HDMI video output to the monitor.

Interestingly, the keyboard also failed with several suddenly dead keys, so I connected an external USB keyboard.
I found out I could just plug in the keyboard and it works, with no changes to the settings.
It's nice since it has a much better key feel than the laptop's "chiclet" keys.

So basically the laptop is now just acting as a computer box with external display, mouse, and keyboard.

Push ebay or aliexpre4ss buttons to search for part number You see printed on Your screen and obtain ir. It costs rather small comparing to service labs offered price. And then deplug the old and plug in the new one.
