My first stepper motor: Microstepping?

I've torn apart a number of failed printers over the years and stripped out the electrical bits. Now that my grandson is showing an interest in robots (to clean his room), I thought I might learn about driving stepper motors.

I have a driver board based on the DRV8825 from TI. The board is a <$2 knockoff of the Pololu one. I'm feeding it a ~5Hz clock and the motor is stepping just fine. Cool!

I'd like to advance to microstepping but I gather that's not possible unless I get the voltage well above the nameplate. Is that right? And to do that safely I'll have to set a current limit for the motor? The motor nameplate says 16V and I'm driving it with 12V. I don't know the rated current.
