Back then the Democrats were afraid if the blacks were freed they would take their jobs in New York at the time in the Textile industry, this made them conservatives. They also aligned them selfs politically with the Confederate States to keep slaves on the plantation. Lincoln was a crazy Liberal who wanted to free the blacks.

It makes me wonder? Why do they want poor un-educated blacks? ah yes, not for the plantation. A Voting base to increase Government Power and a few more steps toward Communism maybe.
