It seems that the circuit I originally came across then is not really suitable. Whist my kids at the moment understand that the toys need feeding (charging) and sleeping (dad's siesta); 160 hours is a little long
I have done some more scouring around the internet and came across this link.

Would this be a better starting point? Although I'm not sure what component T1 is.
I spoke to Yuasa about their data sheets and you guys are correct in that the 6 volt battery charging voltages are wrong. The volts per cell is correct though.
