You'll learn more faster by just reading, then asking here any questions you still have.

Virtually every experiment you can imagine has a predictable outcome. In fact using a circuit simulator such as LTspice is a good way to experiment without cost or risk of burning up a component.

Don't get me wrong: Playing with real components is a good way to learn and to help make the learning permanent. But it's better as the last step in the process, not the first.

( Dang-it-man !!!! almost twice the cost of DigiKey in the States !!!!! )

This part-number is just a generally-tough, generic, high-Voltage, N-Channel-FET,
which should make it slightly more difficult for You to smoke when
the inevitable wiring mistakes are made..
Hopefully You will be using a Power-Supply with limited Current-capabilities.
It has a Heavy-Duty TO-247 Package which should mean that,
for most low-Power Tinkering-Circuits, it "probably" won't need a Heat-Sink.
But You should use some kind of a Heat-Sink anyway.
Just because it has stout ratings, doesn't mean You cant easily smoke it for a variety of reasons !!!!

Could someone please
recommend which components I should purchase for this purpose.
Didn't check the link, but I'd get complementary power devices (IRF44N IRLZ44N/IRF4905) and small signal devices (A03400/A03401).

The former are in TO-220 so you can breadboard with them, but I'd twist the leads 90 degrees to be more compatible with solderless breadboards. The small signal devices are in SOT-23 and would require an adapter for through hole work.

If you need to drive high current MOSFET's directly from 3.3 or 5V logic, you need to choose Logic Level types, such as the IRLZ44 version of the IRFZ44, or else use a level translator or purpose designed driver chip.

Thanks for the info! I am still studying the MOSFET so I may have some questions down the road.
I had a typo on the part number for the N channel power MOSFET. It's IRFZ44N (dropped the L Z when I edited it from IRLZ44N).
