Never used as a data port; do not even know if it is possible, or it is only wired for charging.
Wondering to find out by connecting it to my laptop and see if recognized; did not charge nor report connection when plugged a micro-to-type A USB cable.
Vibrated for a second as when plugged to a charger but reported not being charged.

How does it work ?

The intention is to transfer photos to a laptop; and to explore which gadgets can expand the uses of the smart phone by using its USB connection. But am not finding much.
Do not see settings about enabling external gadgets into USB port either. Running 7.1.1

Link wants to force-funnel me into Google octopus, and mentions a version 9 that I do not have nor see way to updgrade on my 7.1.1 generic phone.
My laptop runs Linux with no Google nexus involvement, and will stay like that. So feels like I will have to remove the internal memory card and feed to the laptop. I do have the proper slot adapter. Will see...
