Ive just come across a mesh analysis and nodal analysis example in a textbook but am really stumped at the math trying to understand it.What do i need to study to make it more clearer bear in mind im just a average joe with a average understanding of maths algebra, arithmetic etc ?

Did you stumble across some weird advance matrix poop? While useful (it's mostly an abbreviation for equations you already know) it can get quite mind boggling.

Generally simple algebra is all you need. Perhaps keep looking for another text.

Technician Mathematics: 1,2,3,4/5 and Mathematics for Eletrical Technicians 4/5 by J Bird & A May cover a lot of math in engineering books.

You mean what you need to know for Network Analysis?

With resistor networks --no matter their configuration-- you need to know how to solve simultaneous equations.

Tony Kuphaldth's books include one named 'Reference' where he teaches you how to solve simultaneous equations with practically no previous Algebra knowledge, also in the 'DC' book you will learn how to solve resistor networks using a program called Octave which solves simultaneous equations for you, for convenience.

Personally, for resistor networks the book "Reference" alone taught me how to solve simultaneous equations without any previous Algebra knowlegde except basic Arithmetic.
