Having traveled the Rio Grand River in Texas several times, it is evident that a similar, if not identical formation, is present in the Boquillas Canyon section of that river. The geologic explanation is that CO2 gas was liberated from liquid lava during an ancient volcanic event, forming the void pockets. The translation of the Spanish word Boquillas is 'little mouths', which is precisely what the canyon walls look like at that river section.
