With so many posts asking where to buy bits but no location given, it would be nice to see location as part of a user profile. It could be required to post after reading forum rules...

I'm basically in favor of the thought, but I suspect it would turn a lot of people off from joining the site. Maybe if there was an explanation along with the requirement.

I don't think admitting one is in Canada, UK, US, or Japan would chase away visitors.

There is actually a plugin for vBulletin that shows the country flag of the user's IP address in the post information as well, with no input needed by user, but a "better" location could be provided in the current way as well.

I like this idea.

Or perhaps a region sort of thing: Europe, Asia, US, Africa.

Hello,

If only the regio is given (Europe, Asia, US, Africa), we can give more specific information on suppliers, power (voltage , frequency), and so on.
Also the time zone can be usefull. That way you can see when the member could be online.

As you might have seen in my profile it is rather detailed.
Holland is the western part of the Netherlands:

I live in the northern part of holland:

In Amsterdam:

Does this just log the initial location or does it update if you log in while on on holiday?
I wouldn't want the whole internet to know that my house is unguarded.
I don't see much wrong with the current system, it doesen't take long to ask "What country are you from?"

Hello,

The "flag" plugin will only work if you connect directly to the internet.
There are also "anonomizers" available, then the plugin will show the flag of the IP of the "anonomizer".

The flag will change with each post, depending on where the post was made from. If they are using an anonymous gateway, the flag will usually change with each post. This leaves the privacy option available to those who desire it.

The flag itself is small, about the same height as a smiley like :D and double the width, and it sits unobtrusively in the right side of the post (or left, it can be configured to sit anywhere in the "post author bar" that you see at the top of every post.

What to be afraid of ,the Moderators are doing a good job of running this
Forum. More dangers else where. With a little more information google earth
would come to your front door,no need to post pictures go to google earth.
If you paid google just think of the of the possibilites. Where do all the
members work .
