Looking for mid-range radio control solution

What could be an IC or board for implementing a mid range (50m-1000m) radio control, perhaps a drone or a rc car, I have some experience in C microcontroller programming, is implementing a SDR from scratch viable?, I have read about zigbee and nrf24 modules but they dont seem to fit on the range required and data rate needed for such implementation.
