The project I'm contemplating is like a rifle scope simulator. I would like to have a tiny LCD or other type of screen that could fit inside a rifle scope. But I'm having trouble finding anything smaller than 2-3". I know it exists; after all haven't we had VR goggles for the past decade or more? Google glasses? The screen on my 2001 flip phone? Why can't I find anything like this for sale?

Color display
hopefully with decent resolution; tiny doesn't have to mean grainy does it? I would like to be able to zoom in on the screen with optics, without turning into lego land.

The reason such things are not for sale is that they are custom products. They are designed and built for custom products that manufacturers expect to sell in large quantities. If they are successful then there is no spare inventory to sell. If they are unsuccessful then they scrap what the have because they are not interested in supporting the display as a separate product. At one time we found it was cheaper to buy laptops and throw away the computer than to buy just the screen.

So... buy a bunch of X (new or used) and pull the part out?

Early 2000's phones should have suitable screen but resolution is not amazing.Phones from 2007-2008 should have small size display but pretty good resolution but I'm not sure about their interface could be pretty complex.

Sounds like you need something I have on my Fuji Camera a .44" 180,000 pixel viewfinder.
No idea where you can get something like this?

Here is what Google Glass uses...
This version complete with development board, and HDMI interface for prototyping.
UltraLow power for ultraMobile devices.

PS: you didn't specify a price limit.
Holy wow, yeah I could use that! Too bad the price tag sinks the whole ship. Well, the 3 main TI DLP components combined cost about $60 so I guess the price you pay is for the dev board mostly. Something to consider...

years ago, I had some sony camera viewfinders, they were black and white, with a .5 inch crt display. the kind of viewfinder that mounted on a video camera. the resolution was very good. in fact, it was readable with its magnifier when connected to a trs model 1 computer. maybe theres something like that on the surplus market.

I was thinking the same thing. I think my parents still have one that uses Hi8 tapes. Black and white lcd? in the viewfinder.

This is brilliant. You can find VHS and Hi8 cameras at goodwill and other second hand stores from $10 to $25.
