Yeah, but the bottom line is they do not want to hire more people, so they make the people they have do more, and still pay less. While I understand your point, the retailers and others are pushing because they can. When times are good and workers scarce they get much better treatment. When times are bad then employers think nothing of feeding their employees whatever they can to make more money. At some point it is about corporate greed, the desire to make money and damn if it hurts someone.

It is a bit like this manager, I am willing to bet he will not be at work, but he will reap the benefits of making other people work. There is little or no accountability.

Bill,

I think I know the company you work for, but even if I don't, the following still applies to most corporate entities.

They don't care any more for their employees than they do for the office equipment. If they did, they wouldn't call employees "human resources." Take care of yourself and your family first.

There a flip side to this, its when work is not work, but something you enjoy.

This can last for many years without tiring of work. There are a lot of members

that enjoy what they do,this includes self employment. The thing that is happening

now is that you have to many that are on the wrong side of the economy. This goes

for your employer too, they are on the down side.By law the company has to make

profit for there stockholders, you may have a stake in that if you have a retirement

plan which is a part of the overall package. Look at the stock market the last week.

Watch out for the gold bubble, just because its there..with no bubbles left.

That does not apply in this case, see the first post.

As for the gold bubble, that one is way overblown. Very few people, except investors, own gold as a hedge against economic collapse nowdays. That and it has a 1001 uses, both industrial and cosmetic.

There is always a bubble, somewhere.

After all the years on the Forum it is very hard to acccept that you are not a

happy person with work or anything else, There are some things you can't

change. It is one thing to write about it,but to have it really be true is hard

to think about.

It isn't abuse. well at least that is not the intent. It is what needs to be done to keep prices low and remain competitive.

If you think the price of food is outrageous now, just think what it would cost if retail outlets paid full benefits and a living wage and suppliers paid the same. Many couldn't afford to feed themselves the rest would be working simply to feed themselves.

It is a rock and a hard place sort of thing.
It would be quite easy if you weren't paying to top 1% of the companies employee's 95% of the profits. Thats where the big chains will always fail us. Whats sad is you get the tune from younger folk (Me included) that this is normal and your supposed to get married both husband and wife are supposed to go get 2 jobs each and still have no benefits. The moneys there for everyone its just been set up to trickle into a couple peoples pockets. BTW I hope the protest walmart, its a POS store. I can honestly say I live within 5 miles of 5 walmarts and have been in one 3 times in 3 years. What pisses me off now is down here their invading the grocery stores. So now we have walmarts, super walmarts, SamsClub(Private Walmart) and Walmart neighborhood Grocer.(Their colors are green.)

Bill,

I'm new around here, and I feel your pain. I work for one of the big aerospace contractors, I end up working every year during the holidays. It really frustrates me... I always get through it, and I've never missed a Christmas with the family, but I do remember testing a box over the holiday break once. It was no fun.

What really chaps my arse is that they recently decided that our first five hours of overtime are unpaid, regardless of the day (it use to be just on normal work days)... so now when I'm not around my family on a Saturday, Sunday or off-Friday, I get the pleasure of knowing that I'm also not getting paid.

Did I mention my healthcare is going up 40% starting January 1? I don't see a 40% merit raise in my future.

Needless to say I'm trying to find a new job - but rarely find the time to actually look because I'm always working either at work or at home. I guess the company wins again.

What keeps me going is the hope that what I'm doing will one day change humanity.

As far as wal-mart and the rest (including my company)... it's all about stock price. We'd be pissed if our 401k's were loosing money. My dad tells a story about being in a big meeting with the CEO of a large gas company... The CEO decided not to do some work that would save lives because it would affect the stock price... his argument was that it was cheaper to pay-off the families of the deceased and any government fines than be proactive in saving lives. My dad didn't work in the industry much longer.

Anyway - hang in there Bill. It gets better - I hope.

@tindel , The undercover boss T.V. show was neat to watch until the same

theme occurrs on the end of each show. They spend a lot of money to make

more money. This also fools the public to make the C.E.O.'s as good guys.It

really shows where all the money goes, to the C.E.O.'s.

3 whole days! Never have I been so happy to get a jury summons, and there is some maintenance work being done to the computers. Since I work 3rd shift I was able to take an extra day off, day shift mixed with 3rd isn't that great.

Whats the felony? Some juicy industrial espionage or a guy not paying parking tickets...?

Three days in a tie and suit is a nice break from your everyday work clothes.

Yep. While not required, it is the convention since you are required by law to show up. The law also states that you can not be fired if you are doing Jury service.

I got a check for 7$ last year when I had to report for jury duty. All day, $7. Cost more than that to get to the courthouse, not to mention the 10 hour overtime shift I had to give up to go in there. I would like to say that "I appreciate the gesture" but I don't. Seems like an insult to me, to send 7$ for a whole day of sitting around waiting on incompetence.

I had jury duty 15 years ago, and really enjoyed it. The place where I worked paid you for 8 hours if you had jury duty. We had some really interesting cases, nothing major, but interesting none the less.
One was a DUI, pulled over by a State Trooper, seems like he had some gardening tools hanging out of his trunk dragging on the ground and sparking.
He failed the field sobriety test, at the jail he demanded the breathalyzer, again fail. So he decided he needed to go to the hospital (1/4 mile away) for a blood test. Yep failed that one too.
It would have taken Perry Mason to get him off, which he didn't have..

The next day he was back in court, we just knew we messed something up, after all why would he be back there. Turns out the tools dragging the ground were stolen, stolen by a group of teen agers the defendant had gotten drunk. He then talked into breaking into a nursery business where he had just been fired. The kids parents were furious and wanted the defendant prosecuted for for a whole list of things, I wasn't on that jury.
