There are unfortunately times where people's expertise and experience get in the way of adequately explaining their reasoning. To them it's obvious, while to others it appears to be condescending or arrogant.

I'm not an expert by any means so some additional research will be needed (I generally just aim for way overkill)...
- Continuous current is not dependent on Vds. It is tied to the power dissipation rating.
- Power dissipation is calculated by your current and Rds for the given gate voltage.

Say you have a max power of 1W, a Rds (on) of 0.100 ohm, and a continuous current of 3.5A.
3.5 x .100 = .35V dropped across the FET.
.35V(dropped) x 3.5A(continuous) = 1.225W.
You may be alright for a few seconds depending on the absolute max ratings, or it may be able to actually handle it, but generally you want to find something more suitable.

- A lot of the "@" have to do with the graphs in the datasheets. There are some serious curves to just about every property of a transistor of any variety. Some times they are the worst case, and other times they are kind like "expected or normal", and other times they are tested values.

This seems to have some decent information... https://www.homemade-circuits.com/understanding-mosfet-current-rating-in-datasheets/

Good luck!!
